Return of the Jack

Posted on Updated on

Well as they say, 3pts will do, especially after the insipid performances at Norwich and Schalke. For the board and Arsenal management a nice tonic after the tetchy AGM.

But this performance was far from convincing. A well organised bottom of the league QPR came to town, probably fancying their chances of at least a point or maybe all 3.

In the first half, despite a little more urgency and fluidity than the two previous games pit together, we barely tested Cesar in goal.

What I can say is having Giroud lead the line gave us some shape, but having Podolski and Ramsey on the right simply doesn’t work. QPR in the first half barely tested us.

I have to reserve a space for the return of our new no.10 Jack Wilshire, the only surviving member of the Van Nasrigashire quartet that if still all here + our latest additions would be challenging for all the big honours. Considering it was his first game for well over a year, I thought he did terrific. Assured with the ball, constantly driving us forward. Welcome back Jack, please stay fit.

Also welcome back to Sagna. As usual a solid performance and played all game. A great achievement. I think Jenkinson could feel aggrieved at being dropped, but he probably needed a rest. I would have dropped Santos instead after Schalke and on his dreadful positioning again today, and played TV5 at left back and brought in Kos.

70 minutes into the second you would be forgiven in thinking you were still watching the 1st half, we didn’t do much. However we eventually started to turn the screw and bringing on Theo helped for the ineffective Podolski.

We started to test Cesar properly, but there was little excuse for Santi not hitting the target with the goal at his mercy. Santi may have pulled a few strings today, but again didn’t perform to the high standards we have seen. A quick word on Cesar, thought he was great and baffles me that we have average goalkeepers whilst international class like Cesar was available on a free.

QPR’s stupid sending off didn’t really contribute to our goal, I think we kept knocking and a goal was coming, I just wasn’t sure from who! I wouldn’t have put money on a Arshavin, Arteta, Cesar, Crossbar combo, but the stadium erupted in relief more than anything else.

QPR then decided they should have a go at us and we weren’t sure to sit on lead or keep attacking. What ever was decided, it almost didn’t work as QPR missed a gilt edged chance, a one on one that Mannone was equal to for once.

Delighted at the 3 points but I still remain unconvinced. Only OT next and someone asked me it will be another 8-2. I said of course not…I can’t see us scoring 2 goals!
